Customize the Logo

If you don’t want to retain the black bar, then just delete the document metadata layer. For new users to the system, this is the easiest approach. With just the printing metadata layer remaining, unlock that layer and replace the fake logo with your own on (a) the cover page and (b) the B-Background layer.

Otherwise, follow these steps to add your logo to the black bar too:

  1. Go to the page one (the cover page)
  2. Unlock the document metadata layer
  3. Delete the fake logo
  4. Orient your own logo in its place, and make sure it’s selected
  5. Select Object > Interactive > Convert to Button
  6. With the button selected, check “Visible in PDF but doesn’t Print” from the panel option menu on the Button panel.
  7. Go to the B-Background master page
  8. Delete the fake logo
  9. Orient your own logo in its place, and make sure it’s selected
  10. Select Object > Interactive > Convert to Button
  11. With the button selected, check “Visible in PDF but doesn’t Print” from the panel option menu on the Button panel.
  12. Select, cut, and the “paste in place” the previous page, home, and next page buttons. This is required since no matter how objects stack visibly in layers, once buttons are PDFed, they are stacked in the order they are added to a document. Therefore, for the previous/home/next buttons to appear above the black bar, you have to cut them out and then add them back in.
  13. Lock the document metadata layer

Once you’ve made your changes, you can save over the original template file using File > Save As and selecting Format as “InDesign CS4 template” in the Save As dialog.
